Fruit Salad

My 18 year old daughter, Zahraa, has just finished her exams, and has loads of free time on her hands. So she’s finally able to help me out more in the kitchen. She likes to look up and try new recipes, and has become quite the cook. She also likes to write, so she decided to try something new and merge these two hobbies to write a guest post for me. A fruit salad recipe. So, now I’ll let Zahraa take over from here…

Hey!! As you know, I’m Zahraa.

Today I would love to share with you a super-duper, easy-peasy recipe that I often make in Ramadan; I hope you like it! 🙂

For those of you who don’t know, Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims around the world. Muslims abstain from worldly pleasures, namely food and drink from dawn until dusk, in order to learn self-restraint and become closer with God. We start the day of fasting with a filling meal, Suhoor, and break the fast at the end of the day with a satisfying meal, Iftar.

Ramadan is such a joyous month.

Although it is a month of fasting, there is a special focus on food for the Suhoor and Iftar meals. Food is shared with friends and family, and many people around the world also like to provide food for Iftar for the poor.

Everyone has got their Ramadan Iftar-time favorites. In South Asian countries samosas, pakoras, pani puri, and bhel are just some of the dishes that are served for Iftar,  and in Middle Eastern countries people enjoy tagine, molokheyya, hummus, and stuffed grape leaves.

But there are some Iftar foods that are simply staples eaten around the world, such as dates, watermelon, coconut, and fruit juices/smoothies. My family’s number one staple Iftar dish is fruit salad. My dad taught me this recipe when I was around 11 or 12 years old, so I have been making it for years now.

What’s great is that this Ramadan, my family decided we would limit fried food only to the weekends. This dish is an easy way to make our Ramadan a bit healthier. It is so yummy but so light, so we still end up having space for Mom’s delicious dinner! 🙂

Ingredients

2 bananas

10-15 grapes

2 apples

2 oranges

½ tsp coconut sugar (or choice of natural sweetener)

½ tsp black pepper (or to taste)

pinch of salt

Method

Skin and dice the apples into small pieces. Slice the bananas into semicircles. Slice each grape into two (small grapes) or into four (large grapes). Peel one orange and cut it into small cubes.

Place all this into a bowl. Use the other orange to squeeze out orange juice, and add this to the bowl along with the black pepper, salt, and coconut sugar. Mix well and enjoy!

Comment below, I’d love to know what some of your family’s Ramadan/festive staple dishes are!
