Not long ago I used to buy store-bought Nutella, since my daughter loves to spread it on her toast for breakfast. But I was not happy for her to eat it regularly because, in addition to containing many unhealthy ingredients, the first ingredient is sugar, and not hazelnuts.
I made this recipe a few times until it was finally “daughter-approved”. She says it tastes almost exactly like the real Nutella.
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups hazelnuts without skin*
1/4 cup + 1 tbsp pure maple syrup
3 tbsp cacao powder or cocoa powder
1/8 tsp sea salt
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp melted raw coconut oil
5 tbsp water
Method:
Blend the hazelnuts in a food processor until it forms a paste. Add the cacao powder, sea salt, vanilla, melted coconut oil, maple syrup and water (one tablespoon at a time) and process again until you achieve the desired smooth texture.
Empty into a glass jar with a lid, and store in the refrigerator for upto 3 weeks. Enjoy your homemade Nutella!
Note: You can adjust the amount of water needed depending on the efficiency of your blender.
* To remove skin from hazelnuts: preheat oven to 120C/248F. Spread the hazelnuts on a baking tray and heat them in the oven for 10-12 mins (oven times may vary). Let them cool slightly and then rub the hazelnuts in your palms to remove the skin.
I tried this recipe and the whole family loved it. It tastes much better than out of a jar, has much less sugar, and you can really taste the hazelnuts. Recommended!
Thank you for trying the recipe. I am glad you loved it. What’s your favorite way to enjoy this spread?
